Southdown is an industrial suburb in Auckland, home to Mighty River Power, beside Mangere Inlet. As the industries close they are being replaced by office parks, as has happened to the Southdown Freezing Works.

In the 19th Century, Portage Road was a strategic link between the two harbours of Auckland linking the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean and followed a route once used by Maori to drag waka (canoes) from one coast to the other. This saved them from having to undertake a journey around North Cape.

The Power Station in Southdown is a natural gas turbine power station providing steam to the industrial area. Operated by state-owned electricity generator Mighty River Power, it helps to power the Auckland urban area during dry periods.

Mt Smart stadium, a venue for professional sports and outdoor concerts, is in Southdown.
